Happy, happy mother’s day

Today I learned Mother’s Day isn’t necessarily about doing something nice for your mom, showing her how much you care, or even saying that you appreciate everything she’s done for you. Mother’s Day isn’t just a day of rest for moms, a day for moms to bask in the glory of their children’s accomplishments, or a day for moms to eat too much dessert. Today when my daughter brought me her carefully crafted bumblebee pencil holder that she said I should take to work, I realized Mother’s Day is a day for mothers to appreciate what they have.

I glanced at the bumblebee pencil holder and immediately started devising a plan to stash it up in the office rather than take it to work–I don’t even know why, because it’s not horrible and I have taken in pictures that she made and hung them on my bulletin board. It’s not that I didn’t want it there, but I had a place for my pencils and didn’t really need a “mom’s a busy bee” holder. But then a switch flipped in my brain, and I told her how lovely it was, and seeing her smile was enough to call it a day. Who needs the presents, or the desserts, or the mom’s day out when you have that.
