The National Anthem

Hank and I play in a concert band, and today we had a concert.

Shira: “You know, that was the national anthem that you played first, the Star-Spangled Banner. That’s what we always sing first thing at school. Now you know what it sounds like.”
Me, thinking that she’s heard it at many concerts before but only just started singing it at kindergarten this year: “Now you know what it sounds like.”
Shira: “No, I already knew, I sang it at kindergarten.”

That’s not fair!

The other day Hank was racing with Shira and cheated by cutting through the yard, which really pissed her off, deservedly so. He tried to make it a lesson about life not being fair, and Shira said, yes, but you have to make it fair by being fair. Tikkun olam from a 5-year-old.
